The third, 1983?s War, was a huge success. Though its early records were popular, it wasn?t until 1987?s The Joshua Tree, which many call a masterpiece, that U2 tasted superstardom.
Thanks to a sweeping sound and nonstop tour schedule, U2 went on to become one of the most popular rock and roll bands of the 1980s. Their songs often had an unabashed political, revolutionary agenda, which only added to their appeal. The band was particularly outspoken on human-right issues, plaing a major role in the Live Aid concert for African famine relief in 1985 and the Live 8 concert in 2005. That same year, U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
